Reflecting on the role of a father is often filled with gratitude, memories, laughter, and sometimes a little bittersweet reflection.
For many, it’s a joy to honor the fathers who showed up. The dads who attended games, fixed bicycles, taught life lessons, offered encouragement, and loved their children through every season of life.
For others, these reflections can feel different.
Some are remembering fathers who are no longer here. Some are healing from relationships that were complicated. And some are mothers who unexpectedly found themselves carrying both roles, doing their best to provide not only love and comfort, but also strength, guidance, and protection.
As a mother, and widow to my son's father, I understand that journey. There were moments when I had to be both the soft place to land and the strong voice that pushed forward. Like many parents, I learned that love often means showing up even when you’re tired, uncertain, or carrying more than you ever imagined.
But this journey also reminds me of something important: children are often shaped by more than one person. Grandfathers, uncles, mentors, coaches, teachers, pastors, and family friends often step into a child’s story in meaningful ways. Their presence leaves fingerprints on a young person’s heart.
Every day, let’s celebrate the fathers who showed up, the father figures who made a difference, and the mothers who carried extra weight when they had to.
Most of all, let’s celebrate the love, sacrifice, and commitment that help children grow into who they were created to be.
To all who have loved, guided, protected, and shown up—thank you. Your impact matters more than you know.
